Don't give up, the simplest way of explaining it is to sail toward then enemy, then turn back when you get in range, at some point during the turn your guns will align with your target (you will have to account for your shells hang time) and that is when you fire. Dont start out trying to bob and weave back and forth every few seconds to sling in for every reload and dodge every shot back. Just take it one shot at a time and (like you see in the gif) make liberal use of the G key. Move in, turn back, fire, wait it out, see where your shot goes, remain aware of everything. If your ship is long then youre best moving back out of range then straightening up quickly so you dont take an aft hit.

Some ships are better than others at slingshotting too, like almost all german ships, so you have to take that into account. But stuff like wether your target can outsling you is something you learn in time.

It would be interesting to know if this is literally slingshotting . seems to me that your definitions are that you are just placing your guns closer to the target to get more distance(hence a longer ship with large gap between gun placement and centre point can give better results)
I think true slingshotting should be achievable on most ships (again longer gap between gun  and centre helps) if the the actual turning force of the ship is conveyed to the fired shells.
Perhaps what i have said above is `a given` but i wasnt sure if momentum of shell has been mentioned. at any rate it would be interesting to know what people think , are the game dynamics clever enough to cater for shell momentum.
