There isn't a great debate on pilot stats. That thing was in the past.
One of the patches some years back changed how pilot stats work, and now pilots ability is solely based on one stat according to their job (Aircraft for scouts and the rest should be obvious enough).
In other words, just grab some damn elites or if you are crazy enough for that bit of stats, heroes.
And someone else has already answered the classing question.

If I would need to crew an Aircraft Carrier, I would first of all place the crew with the high level in base of their skill also and then test it in a battle.
